Ouai Detox Shampoo

April 13, 2026

Who? Valerie Dayan
For how long? 2 bottles

I really need to be convinced to buy an “expensive” shampoo, because I think there are so many budget-friendly options that respond to almost any hair whim. But let me tell you this. Once I’m convinced that a product — yes, even a shampoo — is the best thing out there for me, there’s no going back. Ouai Detox Shampoo, fortunately (and unfortunately), is one of those splurges that’s worth every penny.

My gateway into buying a full-size product is usually a tester or a travel size. Stores and brands, never underestimate the power of a beauty lover’s trial period. Last summer, I picked up a mini Ouai Detox Shampoo at a Roman Sephora before heading to the island of Ponza. Sea salt has a way of clinging to my already dry, itchy scalp, so I wanted something invigorating that would also be gentle. The ingredient list includes detox staples like apple cider vinegar and keratin. It’s formulated without sulfates (SLS and SLES), but uses alternative cleansing agents that make it a strong clarifier. Mind you, I have a very reactive scalp, and this caused zero irritation.

Most “detox” shampoos confuse squeaky clean with effective. This one is one of the few that actually resets the scalp without punishing it.

My initial reaction was to the scent. “This is exactly what a shampoo should smell like,” I literally mumbled to myself. (My boyfriend is used to my delulu product reviews at this point.) Ouai Detox Shampoo carries the brand’s signature Melrose Place scent, with notes of lychee, champagne, rose, and a woody base. Heavenly. The second plus was how the tiniest amount of this gel-textured formula goes a long way. Yes, it’s not exactly cheap, but a 300 ml bottle can last at least a month if used smartly. The real winning moment was when I dried my hair. It was smooth, glossy, and hydrated. Detox shampoos can sometimes leave the hair or scalp feeling stripped, but that’s not the case here. When I got back, I bought the full size and haven’t looked back since. I wash my hair two to three times a week and use Ouai Detox Shampoo once or twice, depending on what my hair needs.

If you use dry shampoo or styling products, have oily hair, or even normal hair but try to stretch your washes, this is a clarifying shampoo that actually treats your hair well. And if you simply love a more elevated self-care moment, it delivers on that too. I’ll keep buying it, not just for the benefits, but because it genuinely makes me happy every time I use it in the shower. And to me, that counts for everything.
